Energy Drinks 101: What This Market Includes
Stop at a warung near a building site or a truck rest area in Indonesia and you will see the same thing: small plastic cups of energy drink chilling next to the iced tea, and a row of short brown glass bottles behind the counter. For millions of Indonesians who work long physical shifts, an energy drink is not a lifestyle product. It is a cheap, quick lift that gets them through the afternoon.
Before looking at numbers, it helps to agree on what we are counting. This article covers ready-to-drink (RTD) energy drinks sold through shops and online stores. That includes glass bottles such as Kratingdaeng and M-150, sealed plastic cups such as Panther and Power F, and cans, both local and imported. It leaves out powdered energy sachets such as Extra Joss powder, which people mix with water or soda. Those powders are a large market in their own right, and they matter because they compete for the same rupiah. Sales in cafés and food stalls where the drink is consumed on site are also outside our figures.
| Term | What it means here |
|---|---|
| Off-trade | Retail sales: what shoppers pay in warung, minimarkets, supermarkets and online, including VAT |
| RTD | Ready to drink: liquid products in a bottle, cup or can, as opposed to powder sachets |
| Value vs volume | Value is sales in rupiah; volume is litres sold. In this category the two give very different rankings |
| Warung / toko kelontong | Small family-run grocers, the main outlet for single-serve drinks |
| BPOM | Indonesia's food and drug authority, which registers energy drinks before sale |
Market Size: Value and Volume
We estimate off-trade sales of RTD energy drinks at about IDR X.XX trillion in 2025, roughly USD XXX million at IDR XX,XXX per dollar. That is up X.X% on 2024 and about XX% a year on average since 2020. The headline growth hides a sharp change in what people buy, which is the single most useful thing to understand about this market.
In litres, the market more than doubled, from about XXX million litres in 2020 to XXX million in 2025. Almost all of that jump happened in 2022, when cheap sealed cups spread through small shops across the country and volume rose about XX% in a single year. Since then the number of litres has grown slowly, by about X% in 2025.
| Indicator | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Value (IDR trillion) | X.XX | X.XX | X.XX | X.XX | X.XX | X.XX |
| Value growth | ████ | +X.X% | +XX.X% | +X.X% | +XX.X% | +X.X% |
| ██████████ | XXX | XXX | XXX | XXX | XXX | XXX |
| ██████████ | XX,XXX | XX,XXX | XX,XXX | XX,XXX | XX,XXX | XX,XXX |
| █████████ | X.XX | X.XX | X.XX | X.XX | X.XX | X.XX |
Notice the average price per litre. It fell by about a quarter between 2020 and 2025. Bottles did not get cheaper; the mix shifted towards cups, which cost a fraction as much per litre. For anyone modelling revenue, this is the trap: a forecast built on litres alone will overstate sales in rupiah, and one built on rupiah alone will miss how many people actually drink the product.
Bottles, Cups and Cans: Three Price Worlds
Energy drinks in Indonesia are really three businesses sharing one shelf. Each pack format has its own price, buyer, channel and economics.
| Format | Typical brands | Implied price per litre | Share of value | Share of volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glass bottle (about 150 ml) | Kratingdaeng, M-XXX, Hemaviton | IDR XX,XXX-XX,XXX | ≈ XX% | ≈ XX% |
| Plastic cup | ██████████ | IDR X,XXX-X,XXX | ≈ XX% | ≈ XX% |
| Can (XXX ml) | ██████████ | IDR XX,XXX-XX,XXX | ≈ XX% | ≈ XX% |
| ██████████ | ████ | ████ | ≈ X% | ≈ X% |
Bottle brands earn far more per litre and spend heavily on promotions in minimarkets. Cup brands sell at very low prices and win on factory efficiency and reach into small shops. Cans are the newest battleground: Bintang Toedjoe launched Extra Joss in cans in 2025, and imported brands are growing online. A founder should decide early which of these three worlds the business belongs to, because the cost structure, capital needs and marketing approach differ completely.
Who Drinks Energy Drinks
The core buyer is a working man on a modest income whose job is physically demanding: farm and plantation workers, construction labourers, truck and bus drivers, motorbike taxi riders and factory shift workers. BPS data shows how large that base is. Of XXX.XX million employed people in May 2026, XX.XX% worked in agriculture alone, more than XX million people.
A second group is growing: teenagers and students, drawn in by milder-tasting cups, new flavours and cans associated with sport and gaming. Panther in particular is seen as gentler in taste than classic energy drinks, which has helped it reach younger buyers.
The group that mostly stays away is the urban middle and upper class. Many see energy drinks as unhealthy because of the caffeine and sugar. Health data gives that concern weight: the Ministry of Health's 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI) found diabetes, measured by blood test, in XX.X% of people aged 15 and over, and high blood pressure in XX.X% of adults. Weak spending power adds pressure at the other end. Our study of Indonesian purchasing power explains why low-income shoppers are trading down to the cheapest packs.
Where Energy Drinks Are Sold
Energy drinks are an impulse purchase, bought cold and drunk on the spot. That is why small neighbourhood shops dominate. They are the only outlets that sell single cups, and the brand with the best stock availability in warung tends to win in volume.
| Channel (share of off-trade value) | 2021 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Small local grocers (warung, toko kelontong) | XX% | XX% |
| Convenience stores (Indomaret, Alfamart) | XX% | XX% |
| ██████████ | X% | X% |
| ██████████ | X% | X% |
| ████ | X% | X% |
Convenience stores matter most for bottles and cans, where brands run frequent price cuts and multi-buy deals. E-commerce is small but the fastest-growing channel, driven by 24-can cartons, buy-one-get-one offers and imported brands such as Monster that are hard to find in shops. For a new brand without a sales force, online is the easiest place to start, but it is unlikely to carry a mass-market cup brand on its own.
Rules a New Brand Must Know
Energy drinks sit in an unusual regulatory spot. BPOM's guidance treats them more like supplements than ordinary soft drinks, and the leading brands are registered through BPOM's supplement system. Kratingdaeng, for example, carries a supplement registration code. This affects who can make the product and how long it takes to reach the shelf.
| Rule | What it means in practice | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Registration | ██████████ | ████ |
| Caffeine and dose | No more than XX mg caffeine per serving, at least XXX kcal per pack, and a maximum of three servings a day stated on the label. | ██████████ |
| ████ | ██████████ | ██████████ |
| █████████ | A to D front-of-pack grades for sugar, salt and fat on ready-to-drink and powdered beverages. Issued XX June XXXX, with a XX-month transition. | Peraturan BPOM XX/XXXX |
| ████ | Mandatory. Products registered as health supplements had until XX October XXXX to certify. | PP XX/XXXX; BPJPH |
Then there is the sugar tax. Government and parliament had agreed an excise on sugar-sweetened beverages in packaging (known as MBDK) from 2026. In December 2025 Finance Minister Purbaya cancelled the 2026 start. In October 2026 the government said it now targets the second half of 2027, with expected revenue of IDR X.X trillion. Energy drinks are explicitly in scope. The tariff design is not final, but an earlier proposal of IDR X,XXX per litre gives a sense of the stakes: on a cup priced near IDR X,XXX per litre that would be an increase of about XX%, while on a bottle near IDR XX,XXX per litre it would be about X%.
Competitive Landscape
Who leads depends entirely on how you measure. In rupiah, PT Asia Health Energi Beverages, which sells the Thai-origin brands Kratingdaeng and Torpedo, holds about XX% of the market. Kratingdaeng alone accounts for around XX% of value, making it the most valuable single brand by a wide margin.
In litres, Kino's Panther is the leader, with about a quarter of volume. Panther holds the widest presence in warung, kept its price unchanged for three years, and keeps adding variants. Wings' Power F has climbed to third place in volume using the group's huge network of small-shop distribution.
| Brand (owner) | Value share 2025 | Volume share 2025 | Volume share 2021* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panther (Kino) | X.X% | XX.X% | XX.X% |
| Torpedo (Asia Health Energi) | X.X% | XX.X% | ████ |
| ██████████ | XX.X% | XX.X% | ████ |
| ████████ | X.X% | XX.X% | X.X% |
| M-XXX (Osotspa) | X.X% | X.X% | X.X% |
| ██████████ | X.X% | X.X% | X.X% |
The story behind the table is a shift of power from bottles to cups. Asia Health Energi still earns most of the money, but it has lost a large slice of volume to Panther and Power F. About XX% of value sits with 'others': Extra Joss cans, imported Red Bull and Monster, regional brands made near their own plants, and private label. That fragmented tail is where most newcomers will start.
Key Players in Brief
| Company | Main brands | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Asia Health Energi Beverages | ██████████ | ██████████ |
| Kino Indonesia (IDX: KINO) | ████ | Volume leader in cups. Company revenue IDR X.XX trn and net income IDR XXX.X bn in FYXXXX; beverages segment IDR X.XX trn in XM XXXX |
| █████████ | M-XXX | ██████████ |
| ██████████ | ████ | Private group; third in volume, rising every year since XXXX |
| ██████████ | █████ | Powder leader that entered cans in XXXX; official energy drink of the national football team since XXXX. Kalbe FYXXXX sales IDR XX.X trn |
One number deserves attention. Kino earned a net margin below X% on its whole business in 2025. Mass-market drinks run on thin margins, which is why scale and distribution, not product formula, decide who survives in cups. If you are studying other everyday staples, our reports on the cooking oils industry and the dietary supplements industry show similar patterns of price-sensitive shoppers and warung-led distribution.
Using This Data in a Feasibility Study
Demand is not the hard question in this category. Tens of millions of working Indonesians already buy energy drinks. The hard questions are which format you can make profitably, whether you can reach shops the leaders already dominate, and how your product will fare once sugar labels and an excise arrive. The table maps the evidence above onto the usual chapters of a feasibility study.
| Feasibility chapter | Key question | Evidence in this article |
|---|---|---|
| Market demand | ██████████ | IDR X.XX trn and XXX million litres in XXXX; value +X.X%, volume +X% |
| Target segment | ██████████ | Bottles earn ~XX% of value; cups move ~XX% of litres; cans are the newest growth format |
| ██████████ | ██████████ | BPOM registration, XX mg caffeine cap, warnings, halal, Nutri-Level labels |
| █████ | ██████████ | ██████████ |
| ██████████ | ████████ | Warung hold about XX% of value; e-commerce is about X% but growing fastest |
| ██████ | █████████ | Leader holds ~XX% of value; ~XX% is spread across smaller and imported brands |
| ████ | ██████████ | Sugar excise now targeted for XH XXXX; health stigma; weak purchasing power |
